Roller blinds have been a stylish and practical window solution in Australian homes for years, offering a clean, modern look that suits any space. But over time, dust, grime, and everyday mishaps can leave them looking a little worse for wear. If you’re unsure how to clean roller blinds without damaging the fabric, don’t stress. We’ve compiled a simple, step-by-step guide to help you clean confidently and keep your blinds looking their best.

What Are Roller Blinds Made from and What Gets Them Dirty?

Most roller blinds are made from one of the following materials:

  • Blockout & Light Filtering fabrics– usually polyester with or without an Acrylic backing or polyester & linen with Acrylic backing
  • Sunscreen fabric is a mesh-like material, usually PVC, vinyl or polyester.
  • These materials are designed to be durable, but each type reacts differently to dirt, moisture, and cleaning products. Common culprits that dirty your blinds include:

  • Dust and pet hair
  • Kitchen grease and moisture
  • Mould or mildew in humid areas
  • Accidental spills or marks from kids and pets
  • Cleaning Roller Blinds by Material Type

Here’s how to safely clean each material without causing damage:

    Polyester Blinds

    What you’ll need:

  • Microfibre cloth or soft sponge
  • Mild detergent
  • Lukewarm water
  • Steps:

  • Fully extend/unroll the blind
  • Mix a small amount of mild detergent in the lukewarm water.
  • Wipe gently with a damp (not soaked) cloth.
  • Rinse with a clean, damp cloth to remove residue.
  • Let it air dry completely before rolling it back up.
  • Avoid:  Scrubbing or using harsh chemicals can damage the fabric or coating.

    PVC or Vinyl Blinds

    What you’ll need:

  • Soft cloth or sponge
  • Warm soapy water
  • Disinfectant (for bathrooms or kitchens)
  • Steps:

  • Fully extend/unroll the blind
  • Wipe down with warm, soapy water.
  • For sticky grime or mildew, use a disinfectant spray.
  • Rinse with a clean cloth and dry with a towel.
  • Tip:  These are the easiest to clean and great for high-moisture areas.
