Whether you’re renovating, moving house, or updating your window furnishings, there may come a time when you need to remove your roller blinds. The good news? It’s easier than you think — and with the right steps, you can do it safely without damaging your walls, brackets, or blinds.

Why People Remove Roller Blinds

There are plenty of reasons to take down roller blinds, including:

  • Moving house – Taking your blinds with you or returning the property to its original condition
  • Renovations – Preparing for painting, plastering or installing new windows
  • Replacing blinds – Upgrading to a fresh new look
  • Cleaning or repairs – Making it easier to deep clean or fix damaged components

    Tools You May Need:

  • Ladder or step stool
  • Gloves (for wide or high blinds)
  • Safety Checks:

  • Ensure the area is clear of furniture or tripping hazards
  • Get someone to help if the blind is wide or mounted high
  • Be gentle – no force required if done right
  • 1. Roll Up the Blind Completely

Begin by pulling the chain or cord to roll the blind all the way up. This action not only makes the blind more manageable but also prevents the fabric from getting in the way during removal.

    2. Removal Steps by Bracket Type:

Roller blinds typically have two types of brackets:

    Hook type

    Slot type

    Hook-Type Bracket

This bracket has small hooks that clip into holes on the blind’s control unit.

    Steps:

  • Lift the chain side slightly – Raise the end of the blind with the control chain to unhook it from the bracket.
  • Slide the blind across – Push the blind gently towards the idle end (non-chain side).
  • Pull it out – Once one end is free, pull the blind away from the idle end bracket to fully remove it.
  • Slot-Type Bracket

This bracket features a slot that locks the chain mechanism in place using a small tab.

    Steps:

  • Start from the idle end – Rotate the plastic cog anticlockwise on the idle end (non-chain side) to retract the metal pin holding the blind in place.
  • Release the blind – With the idle end free, pull the blind away from the chain side (drive end) to remove it from the bracket.
  • For Hook-Type Bracket: Utilises hooks that catch onto corresponding holes on the bracket.

  • Lift the drive end of the blind up slightly to unhook it.
  • Push the blind towards the idle end bracket (opposite the chain) to release one end of the blind.
  • Pull the blind away from the idle end bracket to remove it.
  • For Slot-Type Bracket: Features a slot on the chain winder that connects with a tab on the bracket.

  • Release the blind from the idle end (opposite the chain) by rotating the swivel plate to retract the pin.
  • Pull the blind away from the drive end bracket to remove it.
  • How to Store or Dispose of Old Blinds

  • Storing: Wrap in bubble wrap or old sheets to prevent dust or scratches. Label which window they came from.
  • Disposing: Check with your local council for hard waste or recycling options for blinds.
  • Tips to Avoid Damage During Removal

  • Don’t yank the blind – apply gentle pressure and let the mechanism release naturally.
  • Be mindful of painted or plastered surfaces around the brackets.
  • For wide blinds, have a second person support the opposite side while you remove the brackets.
