The simple guide that makes measuring feel less daunting and more satisfying

Measuring your windows might not sound like the most exciting part of buying roller blinds, but here’s the thing: it can actually feel satisfying.

Armed with a steel tape measure and a bit of guidance, you’re taking the first step toward a space that looks better, feels more private, and blocks the sun when you want it to. The best part? You don’t need to be a DIY expert to get it right.

Let’s walk through it together.

Wait – Do I Really Need to Measure?

Yes, you do. And here’s why.

Our Roller blinds are custom made to measure. A blind that’s even a few millimetres too narrow or too wide can end up letting in too much light, getting caught on a handle, or just not fit!

The upside? When you do measure correctly, your blinds will look sleek, work smoothly, and will totally transform your space.

The Measuring Journey Starts Here

We’ll be honest, there are two ways to measure windows for roller blinds, and which one you pick makes a big difference. So before you even touch the tape, ask yourself this:

Do I want your blinds to sit inside the window frame, or outside it?

Here’s a quick breakdown:

Inside the Frame (Recess Fit)

This is the more minimal look. The blind tucks neatly into the frame, showing off your window’s shape and trim.

Perfect if: – You’ve got nice window frames or tiles you want to show off – You like a tidy, built-in look – Your window recess will need to be at least 60mm to install your blinds this way. Your window will not have any obstructions like winders or handles or be divided into window frames with mullions.

Just keep in mind: there’ll always be a little light gap at the edges of the blind as that’s normal with insided mount roller blinds.

Outside the Frame (Face Fit)

Here, the blind sits on the wall or architrave, covering the whole window, and sometimes a little more.

Perfect if: – You want less light gaps and block-out. With this installation type the fabric can cover the entire window – from the outer edge of the architraves

You’ll need to allow a bit of extra width and height when measuring (more on that shortly).

The Most Common Measuring Worries (and Why They Don’t Matter)

If the idea of measuring makes you nervous, you’re not alone. We hear it all the time:

“What if I stuff it up?”

“What if my windows aren’t square?”

“I don’t even own a tape measure!”

Let us reassure you: – Most windows aren’t perfectly square, it’s normal, and we account for it

– A steel tape measure costs less than a takeaway coffee

– If you can use a phone camera, you can measure a window

Measuring isn’t hard. You just need a little patience, and the right mindset. Think of it as the prep work before a good paint job: not glamorous, but totally worth it.

The Golden Rules of Measuring

Measure each window individually. Even if they look the same, they might not be.

Use a steel tape, not a cloth one. Accuracy matters.

Write it down immediately. Don’t rely on memory.

Measure twice. Seriously. Saves you stress later.

A Real-World Measuring Moment

One of our customers, Alex, recently told us this:

“I was dreading the measuring bit. But once I did the first window, I actually enjoyed it. Felt like I was finally getting things done around the house!”

That’s the kind of moment we want for you. Measuring your windows means you’re halfway to having your dream blinds installed. And that’s exciting.

What to Do With Your Measurements

Once you’ve got them, the next step is simple: head to the roller blinds product page and plug them in. Just make sure to select whether you’re ordering for a recess fit or face fit—we’ll handle the rest.

  1. For recess fit, we make a small deduction to ensure a snug, clean fit.
  2. For face fit, we make the blind the exact size you give us.

So accuracy matters—but perfection isn’t required. You’ve got some buffer.

Tricky Windows? We’ve Seen It All

Have windows with tiles, handles, or awkward corners? Bay windows or narrow recesses?

Don’t panic.

There’s almost always a workaround, and we’re happy to chat through options. Reach out with a photo or give us a call, we actually like solving tricky window puzzles.

Final Thoughts: Own the Process

There’s something empowering about measuring your own windows. It’s a small but meaningful act of taking charge of your space.

You don’t need a tradie. You don’t need to overthink it. You just need a tape measure, a few quiet minutes, and the confidence to start.

At iSeek Blinds, we’re here to support you every step of the way from first measurement to final install.

So grab that tape measure, take a breath, and get started. You’ve got this.

And if you’d rather leave it to the pros? No worries—you can also book a Check Measure Service online through iSeek Blinds. Easy, fast, and done for you.
