Whether you’re renovating a home, sprucing up a rental, or building a new space, roller blinds are a sleek and functional option. But before you order, it’s essential to get your measurements right—especially if you’re going the DIY route. At iSeekBlinds, we’re here to make it simple. This guide will walk you through exactly how to measure roller blinds, whether you’re installing them inside or outside your window frame.

Inside vs Outside Mount – What’s the Difference?

Before you start measuring, decide how you want your blinds to sit:

  • Inside Mount: The blind fits neatly within the window frame for a minimalist look.
  • Outside Mount: The blind covers the entire window frame and beyond—great for light control and making small windows look larger.
  • Tip: If your window recess is shallow or uneven, outside mount  may be the better choice.

    What You’ll Need

  • Metal measuring tape (not fabric)
  • Pen and notepad (or notes app)
  • Step stool (for tall windows)
  • Our Printable Measuring Checklist
  • How to Measure Inside Mount Roller Blinds

    Step 1: Check the depth

  • Ensure there is at least 60mm of depth  between the glass and the front edge of your window frame to allow enough space for the roller blinds to fit neatly and operate smoothly within the recess.
  • Step 2: Measure the Width

  • Measure the inside width of the window recess from left to right, at the top  of the frame.
  • Step 3: Measure the Drop

  • Measure the height of the recess from top to bottom  on either the left or right  side.
  • Tip: Round to the nearest millimetre  and double-check your figures.

How to Measure Outside Mount Roller Blinds

    Step 1: Measure the Width

  • Measure from the outer edge of the architrave  on one side to the outer edge of the architrave  on the other.
  • Step 2: Measure the Drop

  • Measure from above the architrave or where the brackets will sit, down to your preferred endpoint.

  • Common Measuring Mistakes to Avoid

  • Measuring just once — always double-check
  • Using a fabric tape — go for a metal one for accuracy
  • Not accounting for bracket space
  • Guessing or rounding off too loosely
  • Step-by-Step Recap

  • Measure width and drop as per your mount type
